Single Parent Families Ministry

Our Mission:
To provide practical, tangible assistance for single moms and dads and to offer a support network for encouragement.

Our Ministry:
There is a general assumption in many churches that ministry to single parents must take the form of support groups, Bible studies or family socials. While any one or more of these things can be appropriate, studies have shown that the most needed ministry for single parents is one of the helps–practical assistance. This assistance can take on many forms, as you can see by the list below.

If you are a single mom or dad who needs a little help in a particular area, or if you would like to volunteer to be a provider of assistance to any of our single parents and their families, please contact Alan Smith. We are currently seeking volunteers who are able to provide the following services:

  • babysitting
  • car maintenance / repair
  • financial counseling
  • haircuts
  • hauling
  • home maintenance / repair
  • job interview skills
  • lawn care
  • meals
  • mentoring
  • moving assistance
  • resume writing
  • spiritual encouragement
  • tutoring

Not all of these areas represent a current need in a single parent family. But we would like to begin enlisting volunteers now who would be willing to provide any one or more of these services when a need arises.

Facts and Statistics:
According to studies in 1998:
26% of all families with children were headed by single parents
3.1 million children lived with the fathers only.
44% of single fathers were divorced, 35% had never married, about 16% were separated, 5% were widowed
Most (77%) single mothers worked
Of single fathers raising their own children, 11% cared for three or more
About 25 million children are growing up with out fathers in the home
About 13 million children without fathers in the home have never been to their father’s homes
